Using Media to Promote Entrepreneurship and Women’s Empowerment:  A Transformative Project Culminates in Burundi

Bujumbura, Burundi – August 31, 2023

An important chapter in Burundi’s journey towards sustainable development and social transformation has reached its conclusion as Tuyage, the USAID-funded highly impactful project aimed at improving and empowering the media, all while fostering reconciliation, entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment draws to an inspiring close.

The United States, through USAID, has funded this activity with a total of $7,940,300. Since its inception in June 2018, Tuyage has been a beacon of hope and progress, using innovative methods for the media to share messages for economic empowerment across Burundi, and forge pathways towards a brighter future for all. Through collaborative endeavors, dialogue, and shared experiences, this activity has showcased the resilience and strength of Burundi’s people.

Tuyage recognized the power of the media to foster entrepreneurship as a catalyst for positive change. Over the past five years, Tuyage has supported more than 500 journalists across the country and empowered them to produce business information that all Burundians can use to establish and grow businesses. These activities have not only created jobs and improved livelihoods but have also paved the way for sustainable development.

One of the standout achievements of Tuyage has been its steadfast commitment to women’s empowerment. By breaking down barriers and empowering women to participate fully in economic, social, and political spheres, the project has catalyzed a paradigm shift in gender equality dynamics. Burundians enjoyed following the Nd’Umu DG (“I am a CEO”) television show, propelling the participants’ businesses, especially women, to new levels. Women’s empowerment has not only enriched individual lives, but has also had a multiplier effect on communities, driving progress and fostering inclusivity.

Tuyage concluded on August 31, 2023, and left behind a rich legacy of resilience, unity, and hope. Its impact will continue to reverberate in the lives of individuals, families, and communities for years to come. The lessons learned and successes achieved will serve as a foundation upon which Burundi can build a brighter and more equitable future.

These exceptional achievements of Tuyage and many other activities funded by USAID are possible thanks to the strong and resilient partnership with the Government of Burundi and our local and international partners. The Search for Common Ground Burundi implemented Tuyage with an unwavering dedication and professionalism.

Our collective efforts demonstrate the transformative potential that arises when reconciliation, entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment converge, paving a solid path for Burundi’s journey towards prosperity.
