The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens residing in and visiting Burundi that a major political protest is expected today, Sunday, April 26. The protest is planned to begin at Gare du Nord in Kamenge and move to Cathedral Regina Mundi. The protest is intended to oppose the third term candidacy of President Nkurunziza. U.S. citizens should avoid all demonstrations.
Although most recent demonstrations and protests have been largely peaceful, it is important to remember that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. The most recent demonstration resulted in police deployment of tear gas and water cannon. It is recommended that you avoid areas of planned demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. If you find yourself near such an event, leave the area. If it is not safe to do so immediately, maintain a low profile until you are able to relocate.
U.S. Embassy Bujumbura strongly recommends that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Burundi enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings including the Travel Warning for Burundi, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information for Burundi.
